BRAIN-DEAD TEENAGER SAVES 5 LIVES THROUGH ORGAN DONATION
Bangalore: A 13-year-old boy from Kunigal, Karnataka, who was declared brain dead by a team of doctors yesterday, saved the lives of 5 people. The deceased met with an accident while pillion riding on a two-wheeler that lost control. He was immediately rushed to SPARSH Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, where the boy was declared brain dead upon arrival.
Jeevasarthakathe, the state body working on cadaver organ donation, and the doctors at SPARSH, counselled the boy’s father, Narayana to consider the option of organ donation. With their consent, the doctors operated on the donor to harvest some of his vital organs including the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs.
The donor’s liver and heart were sent to Narayana Hospital. Lungs were sent to BGS Hospital. One of the kidneys was transferred to Command Hospital, whereas the other one will remain at SPARSH Hospital, Yeshwanthpur until a suitable match is found.
“I really praise the boy’s father for taking such a noble decision to donate the organs to the needy. I am also delighted to see more and more people saying yes to organ donation,” said Dr. Sharan Patil, Chairman, SPARSH Hospital in a statement.
